CAE students achieve the first and second place in the graduate competition of RCF 2009
Antonio de Luca (right) achieved first place for the research poster presentation titled, "Behavior of full-scale concrete columns internally reinforced with glass FRP bars under pure axial load." Coauthors on this work included Antonio De Luca, Dr. Fabio Matta, and Dr. Antonio Nanni of the University of Miami. Hasan Abdel Fattah (left) achieved second place for the research poster presentation titled, "Online Sorting of Recovered Wood Waste by Automated XRF Technology." Coauthors on this work included Dr. Helena Solo-Gabriele of the University of Miami and Dr. Timothy Townsend of the University of Florida.

Karen Kajder (B.S. Environmental Engineering 2009) has recently won two prestigious awards:
- The Environmental Engineers of the Future Award, which providing graduate school funding for 2009-2010. The program is sponsored by public and private sponsors throughout the United States, and aims at preparing students for practice in the municipal water, wastewater and solid waste management fields. The funding provides in-state tuition and living expenses up to $20,000 at any university chosen by the student.
- The Roy W. Likins Memorial Scholarship, awarded through the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association. The award recognizes an undergraduate or graduate student at a Florida university pursuing a degree related to the drinking water industry, demonstrating academic achievement, integrity, and leadership in community and civic activities, and showing outstanding potential to be a leader in the drinking water industry.

Mary Wright is one of a select group of incoming Ph. D. students who receiveda University of Miami fellowship which provides full stipend and tuition support. She is currently in the process of finishing her M.S. degree with a GPA of 3.9. Her research work focuses on evaluating recreation water quality (i.e. determining whether or not it is safe to swim at the beach). Her work has focused on establishing a relationship between the levels of microbes in water and human health effects.

Mary Wright
Hasan Abdel Fattah has been awarded the Ron Cockroft Award, a prestigious international award that provides an amount of 14,090 Swedish Kronor (approx. $2,300 US) towards his participation at the Conference of the International Research Group on Wood Preservation scheduled for May 2008 in Istanbul, Turkey. At the conference, he will be presenting research focusing on the environmental impacts of a chemical wood preservative known as Chromated Copper Arsenate which is used to protect wood from termites and fungi. He will also present a poster describing a new technology for rapidly assessing the presence of the chemical in wood when disposed.

Hasan Abdel Fattah
Cristina Ortega, an undergraduate student in Civil and Environmental Engineering was the recipient of two awards distributed during the Association of Cuban Engineers Gala Banquit in February 2008. She received the Pedro O. Martinez Award and the Luciano Goicoechea Scholarship Award. The second award is provided to only the top undergraduate students at the University of Miami.

Cristina Ortega
Erik Sibila, an undergraduate student in Architectural Engineering, was the recipient of the Jose A. Vila Award distributed during the Association of Cuban Civil Engineers Gala Banquet in February 2008.
